Is it worth getting a professional headshot in London? (Here’s what you need to know)
If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling through LinkedIn, spotlight, or your website and thinking “I really should update that photo”, you’re not alone. Most of us know when our picture no longer feels like us, but the idea of paying for a professional headshot can be enough to look at that image again more favourably.
As a London portrait photographer, I get this question all the time: “Is it actually worth it?” So I’d like to talk about what you really get when you invest in a professional headshot, what to expect from the process, and how to know if it’s time to update yours.
Why people ask this question
We live in a world where everyone has a decent camera in their pocket. A friend can snap a “pretty good” photo. So why pay someone £200, £300 or even £1000 to do it properly?
Because the truth is, although it’s easy to think that a headshot is just a picture of your face, it far more than that. It represents you, your personality and your confidence. Whether you’re an actor, creative, or small business owner, people make snap judgments online in seconds. A professional headshot helps you put your best foot forward and show any potential customers, casting directors or collaborators how you show up in an honest and favourable way.
I’ve seen so many clients tell me they used to avoid putting their photo out there because they just didn’t like how they looked in pictures. Once they finally invested in a session, it changed the confidence they had when sending that image out into the world. Not just online, but in real life too.
What a professional headshot actually does
What separates a professional headshot from a DIY one?
Having a good camera helps, don’t get me wrong, but it’s mostly about:
Lighting that flatters your features instead of washing you out.
Angles and posing that make you look confident, not stiff.
Guidance that brings out genuine warmth and personality.
Colour choices and backgrounds that fit your goals, whether that’s acting, business, or personal branding.
When I work with clients, I spend time getting to know what they need their photos to do for them. For some, it’s landing an audition. For others, it’s attracting clients who resonate with their brand. A photographer should help guide you through the process so your photos don’t just look like you, they look like the best version of you.
Is it worth the money?
A two-hour professional session in London (mine are £285 - see here) covers far more than just clicking a few buttons on a camera. It should include:
A pre-session chat about your goals and styling.
Professional lighting and setup (whether studio or natural light outdoors).
Multiple looks and outfit changes so you have variety.
Expert editing that polishes without overdoing it.
Could you find a cheaper option? Sure. But often those photos don’t capture who you are, they just tick a box. A great headshot helps you connect. That’s why for so many people it’s a no-brainer, because it can pay for itself after their first new opportunity or client.
The difference a great headshot makes
I’ve seen first-hand how a new headshot can completely shift someone’s confidence.
Actors have landed auditions within the first few days of having their new headshots up. Creatives have seen more engagement on social media. Professionals have finally felt proud to put themselves forward.
When you have a photo that truly reflects you, it becomes easier to show up, whether that’s online, at castings, or in meetings. For some it can feel like vanity, but it’s about instilling you with the confidence that people will see the best version of you off the bat.
Where to get professional headshots in London
London’s full of photographers, so how do you choose the right one?
The best fit isn’t just about price or location, it’s so much more about connection and style. You want someone who takes the time to understand your goals, helps you feel comfortable, and brings out your real personality.
Do your research!
Take your time to look through each photographer’s previous work and reach out to a few of them and ask any questions that you have. Some will have a strict process of how they do things and will tell you how the session is going to run, for some this is perfect. Others are more flexible and will work to your needs and mold the session around you, but it’s entirely up to you which one you prefer.
How to know when it’s time to update your headshot
If you’re not sure whether it’s time to refresh your headshot, here are a few signs:
You look noticeably different now (new haircut/colour, facial hair, glasses, etc.)
Your current photo is more than two years old
It no longer matches your brand or the roles you’re applying for
You simply don’t like it and that stops you from sharing it confidently
If that’s you, then it’s probably time.
Final thoughts
So, is it worth getting a professional headshot in London?
(Not that I’m biased, but…) Absolutely. Not just because of the photo itself, but because of how you feel when you see yourself represented in an honest and comfortable way. The confidence that comes with that is worth far more than the price tag.
If you’re ready to finally have a headshot you’re proud to share, you can take a look at my session options or get in touch to chat about what could suit you best. Either way, good luck in gaining the new found confidence that come with a fresh headshot!

Prices vary hugely, but expect to pay between £200–£400 for a quality session with at least 3 or 4 images included. Often additional images are £10-30 each and can be decided on once you’ve seen the full gallery.
The things to consider are:
How many final images you want.
How many different looks you would like from the session (usually photographers will state how many looks they allow in each session)
Are these in a studio or outdoor? Outdoors might affect how easy outfit changes are as well as the lighting. If you have a very specific look you want, a studio session might be best.
For example my two-hour session is £285, includes studio rental, 4 outfit changes and 5 final images with additional images being £20 each.
-
Absolutely. Some clients use the same image across LinkedIn, Spotlight, social media, and their personal websites. Others want to create a unique persona for different aspects of their life, businesses or casting opportunities.
Ultimately it does look better if you have multiple images to put on your website or spotlight profile (which is why I include 5 with my standard package) but you can definitely get away with keeping things simple.
-
That entirely depends on you. If you are an actor and you have a few studio headshots that you’re happy with and you just want to freshen things up, then an outdoor shoot where you can be more dynamic and get some cinematic shots could be exactly what your spotlight profile needs.
If you’re a small business owner and spend your time crafting away in a studio surrounded by things you’ve made and poured love into then that might be the best place have your photo taken.
-
Again, this very much depends.
For professionals and business owners that have a low turnover of clients a good headshot could serve you well for 3 or 4 years.
For anyone constantly wanting to attract new people (could be clients or casting agents) and present a fresh look, then yearly is best. Some might even go for multiple in a 12 month period.
-
Not at all. That is absolutely the photographers job.
Headshots and portraits are completely different from shooting models, so there is no expectation that you’ll come into the studio and know everything about posing.
It’s the photographers job to understand how you would like to present yourself and what you would like people to see/feel when they look at your photos. From there it’s their responsibility to guide you through some poses that will help you feel and show exactly that.
